INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 18, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating May 12, 2007, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in 2 Pennsylvania; and commending the National Association of 3 Letter Carriers for its humanitarian efforts to eliminate 4 hunger. 5 WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 12, 2007, the National Association 6 of Letter Carriers will conduct the 15th Annual NALC National 7 Food Drive to combat hunger; and 8 WHEREAS, This is the largest one-day food drive in the 9 nation, which is held in all 50 states and territories of the 10 United States; and 11 WHEREAS, On that day, letter carriers will collect 12 nonperishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal 13 routes; and 14 WHEREAS, The food will be collected in over 10,000
1 communities by nearly 1,500 local branches of the postal union, 2 along with rural carriers and other volunteers; and 3 WHEREAS, Donations will be delivered to food banks, pantries 4 and shelters that serve the area where the donations are 5 collected; and 6 WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time 7 for millions of children whose school lunch programs are 8 suspended until fall and their families must find alternate 9 sources of nutrition; and 10 WHEREAS, Letter carriers see these families every day as they 11 deliver the mail and this food drive is one way to help 12 alleviate their plight; and 13 WHEREAS, Postal patrons are encouraged to participate by 14 leaving donations by their mailboxes on May 12; and 15 WHEREAS, Cosponsors of the drive are the United States Postal 16 Service, the Campbell Soup Company, Valpak/Cox Target Media, 17 Inc., local United Ways, the AFL-CIO and America's Second 18 Harvest food bank network; and 19 WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1993, the nationwide drive 20 has collected and delivered over three-quarters of a billion 21 pounds of food to help hungry families and last year carriers 22 collected 70.5 million pounds of food, which is the third 23 consecutive year the effort has exceeded 70 million pounds; 24 therefore be it 25 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare May 12, 26 2007, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be 27 it further 28 RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers 29 and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts 30 to stamp out hunger; and be it further 20070H0225R1285 - 2 -
