        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 20, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of October 3 through 9, 1999, as "Reflex
     2     Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Awareness Week" in
     3     Pennsylvania.

     4     WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians should be made aware that a
     5  multitude of seemingly unrelated disorders constitute the
     6  serious condition known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome
     7  (RSDS); and
     8     WHEREAS, There are an estimated eight million people
     9  throughout the United States who suffer from RSDS, a painful
    10  disorder caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system
    11  following a trauma, injury, infection or surgery; and
    12     WHEREAS, In 70% of patients RSDS spreads through the same,
    13  opposite or both extremities and can spread throughout the body;


     1  and
     2     WHEREAS, Any part of the body, internally or externally, may
     3  be affected, causing constant and excruciating pain; and
     4     WHEREAS, Despite the efforts of many health care
     5  professionals, researchers and doctors, RSDS remains extremely
     6  difficult to diagnose and treat; and
     7     WHEREAS, If the disease is undetected and untreated in the
     8  early stages, the cure rate for patients drops significantly to
     9  less than 5%, and RSDS may become a lifelong debilitating
    10  condition; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week
    12  of October 3 through 9, 1999, as "Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
    13  Syndrome Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the citizens
    15  of this Commonwealth to learn about the causes, symptoms,
    16  diagnoses and treatments for reflex sympathetic dystrophy
    17  syndrome; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be provided to the
    19  Philadelphia Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Support Group, the
    20  Northwestern Pennsylvania Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome
    21  Association and the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome
    22  Association of America.
