        ADOPTED, JANUARY 30, 1990

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Governor to declare January 31, 1990, as "Catholic
     2     School Appreciation Day."

     3     WHEREAS, Catholic schools in this Commonwealth are
     4  celebrating Catholic Schools Week during the period from January
     5  28 to February 3, 1990; and
     6     WHEREAS, Catholic elementary and secondary schools educate
     7  approximately 250,000 students in this Commonwealth; and
     8     WHEREAS, Catholic schools instill in our young people a
     9  strong foundation of values, enhancing self-esteem, building
    10  self-confidence and developing leadership skills; and
    11     WHEREAS, Catholic schools prepare young people to serve


     1  others in our society and to accept the challenges they will
     2  face as leaders of tomorrow; and
     3     WHEREAS, Catholic schools save State and local government in
     4  excess of 500 million dollars annually in school operational
     5  costs, not including capital investment; and
     6     WHEREAS, Catholic schools, in educating a quarter of a
     7  million students annually with a dropout rate of less than 3%
     8  and a postgraduation higher education enrollment rate of 80%,
     9  provide young people with solid values and academic skills
    10  needed in becoming responsible citizens of this Commonwealth;
    11  therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express
    13  congratulations and appreciation to Catholic elementary and
    14  secondary schools throughout the Commonwealth on the occasion of
    15  Catholic School Week 1990 and urge the Governor to declare
    16  January 31, 1990, as "Catholic School Appreciation Day" in this
    17  Commonwealth.
