        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 19, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2001 as "Planning Great
     2     Communities Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, More than 300 years ago this Commonwealth was
     4  founded by William Penn on the strength and character of
     5  communities, and this Commonwealth will continue to grow and
     6  prosper as we remain focused on the importance of community
     7  planning; and
     8     WHEREAS, Community planners are currently called upon to
     9  fulfill many of the tasks William Penn empowered William Markham
    10  and Thomas Holme to do more than 300 years ago; and
    11     WHEREAS, Today more than 1,600 municipalities throughout this
    12  Commonwealth have exercised their authority to establish


     1  planning commissions; and
     2     WHEREAS, Community planners are entrusted to protect the
     3  health, safety and welfare of their communities by improving
     4  existing conditions, ensuring orderly and efficient land
     5  development and growth and balancing the interests of all
     6  segments of the population, ensuring that progress improves the
     7  quality of life for the entire community; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That, in acknowledgment of the important
     9  contributions planners make to our communities, the House of
    10  Representatives designate the month of October 2001 as "Planning
    11  Great Communities Month" in Pennsylvania.
