        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 7, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of May as "Foster Grandparent Program
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program began on August 28,
     4  1965, under the Office of Economic Opportunity; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program permits persons over
     6  60 years of age to engage in intergenerational volunteer service
     7  that meets critical community needs; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program serves children under
     9  21 years of age who have special requirements, including
    10  children who are mentally or physically challenged, juvenile
    11  delinquents and children who are abused, neglected, learning-
    12  disabled or come from a low-income family background; and
    13     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program enables participating
    14  children to improve their physical, mental, emotional and social

     1  development and attain educational goals through tutoring,
     2  mentoring, counseling and other personal support services; and
     3     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program greatly enriches the
     4  lives of the children as well as the adult volunteers; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program has grown from a few
     6  programs in several states to 325 programs in all 50 states and
     7  has over 30,000 volunteers; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program serves more than
     9  275,000 children annually; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
    11  commend the immeasurable contributions of the Foster Grandparent
    12  Program and its volunteers in this Commonwealth; and be it
    13  further
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    15  month of May as "Foster Grandparent Program Month" in
    16  Pennsylvania.
