        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 24, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring October 8 through 14, 2001, as "Mighty Eighth Air
     2     Force Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The Eighth Air Force was formed and dispatched to
     4  England in 1942 to become the largest military unit in World War
     5  II and the largest bomber force of all time; and
     6     WHEREAS, Over 350,000 personnel served in the Mighty Eighth
     7  Air Force in Europe during that war; and
     8     WHEREAS, While not a single Mighty Eighth mission was ever
     9  turned back due to enemy action, 26,000 members of the force
    10  were killed in action, over 28,000 became prisoners of war, and
    11  the number of those missing in action and wounded is not known;

     1  and
     2     WHEREAS, During October 8 through 14, 1943, the Eighth Air
     3  Force lost 148 heavy bombers to enemy action over the skies of
     4  Europe but was able to continue a daytime strategic bombing; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Eighth Air Force is presently an operational
     6  combat unit with over one million men and women serving the
     7  country in war and in peace; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Eighth Air Force Historical Society is the
     9  largest single military unit veterans group in history and holds
    10  annual reunions in the month of October; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Eighth Air Force Historical Society seeks to
    12  remind the public of the contribution and sacrifice its members
    13  have made to perpetuate our freedom and way of life; therefore
    14  be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare October 8
    16  through 14, 2001, as "Mighty Eighth Air Force Week" in
    17  Pennsylvania.
