           FAIRCHILD, FICHTER, FLICK, FREEMAN, GEIST, GIGLIOTTI,

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           NOVEMBER 3, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Dr. William F. Burke, assistant principal of Bartram
     2     High School, Philadelphia, for his heroism, bravery and
     3     concern for the welfare and lives of students.

     4     WHEREAS, Dr. William F. Burke has served the Philadelphia
     5  School District for over 20 years as a trade coordinator,
     6  working with vocational teachers and teaching social studies and
     7  math; and
     8     WHEREAS, Dr. Burke's hard work and commitment to education
     9  were recently recognized in his appointment to the position of
    10  assistant principal; and
    11     WHEREAS, On October 4, 1999, Dr. Burke took immediate action
    12  to resolve a dispute between two students by arriving on the
    13  scene before school security; and
    14     WHEREAS, Dr. Burke's selfless behavior placed him in great

     1  danger and ultimately resulted in a gunshot wound to his leg;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Dr. Burke's injury occurred while serving his
     4  school, community and the Philadelphia School District; and
     5     WHEREAS, Dr. Burke's sacrifice of his personal safety led to
     6  the arrest and apprehension of a violent at-risk youth; and
     7     WHEREAS, Dr. Burke demonstrated his commitment to upholding
     8  the banner of education and stands as a living example of
     9  excellence and a model for the highest educational values;
    10  therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
    12  honor Dr. William F. Burke as an outstanding citizen and
    13  educator for his bravery and courage in the face of danger.
