A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of
Philadelphia's South 9th Street Italian Market.
WHEREAS, Antonio Palumbo, an Italian immigrant, opened a
neighborhood boarding house for his fellow Italian immigrants in
the mid-to-late 1880s; and
WHEREAS, In increasing numbers, businesses surrounded the
boarding house to serve the neighboring community and the
businesses grew to form the largest outdoor continuous market in
the nation; and
WHEREAS, Providing the necessary goods and services to the
community while promoting commercial and economic development,
the market grew to encompass the area along 9th Street from
Wharton Street to Fitzwater Street; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the South 9th Street Businessmen's
