        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JANUARY 20, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the Penn State women's volleyball team for its
     2     outstanding season.

     3     WHEREAS, Since 1981 the National Collegiate Athletic
     4  Association has sponsored a national championship in women's
     5  volleyball, and Penn State is only one of four teams in the
     6  country to have appeared in all 17 tournaments; and
     7     WHEREAS, Penn State will begin the 1998 season with the
     8  nation's longest home winning streak, 36 games; and
     9     WHEREAS, The team's coach, Russ Rose, is only the eighth
    10  active women's volleyball coach to record 600 career wins at one
    11  school, and his winning percentage is second in the nation; and
    12     WHEREAS, Coach Rose was named the Tachikara/American


     1  Volleyball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year; and
     2     WHEREAS, Three members of the team were named to the American
     3  Volleyball Coaches Association All-American Team: senior middle
     4  hitter Terri Zemaitis and sophomore setter Bonnie Bremner were
     5  selected for first team honors and sophomore middle hitter
     6  Lauren Cacciamani was named to the second team; and
     7     WHEREAS, Seven members of the squad were selected to the Fall
     8  Sports Academic All-Big Ten Team; and
     9     WHEREAS, On December 20, 1997, the Lions met Stanford, the
    10  only other school with three All-Americans, in Spokane,
    11  Washington, for the national championship; and
    12     WHEREAS, Despite a valiant comeback, the Lions lost, 3-2, to
    13  defending champion Stanford; and
    14     WHEREAS, Terri Zemaitis was named the NCAA women's volleyball
    15  championship tournament's outstanding player; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives offer its
    17  congratulations to Coach Rose and the Penn State women's
    18  volleyball team upon completion of an outstanding season.
