HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 329 Session of 1999


        INTRODUCED BY ORIE, DeWEESE, PISTELLA, READSHAW, RUFFING,
           FRANKEL, COSTA, MAYERNIK, KAISER, PIPPY, MARKOSEK, LAUGHLIN,
           VAN HORNE, STEVENSON, PRESTON, MICHLOVIC AND DERMODY,
           DECEMBER 8, 1999

        ADOPTED, DECEMBER 8, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Helen Clay Frick Foundation to retain the
     2     distinguished historical papers compiled by Henry Clay Frick
     3     in western Pennsylvania.

     4     WHEREAS, Henry Clay Frick was a significant individual in
     5  Pennsylvania history who made numerous contributions to the
     6  economic and social history of this State, especially in western
     7  Pennsylvania; and
     8     WHEREAS, A prominent figure in Pennsylvania's industrial
     9  heritage, Henry Clay Frick was instrumental in building
    10  Pittsburgh as the steel capital of this country; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Frick Family Archives serves as historically
    12  important evidence of business and social events during the
    13  Industrial Revolution in western Pennsylvania, and it is
    14  imperative that the archives be sustained in that locality; and
    15     WHEREAS, The daughter of Henry Clay Frick, Helen Clay Frick,
    16  discerned the significance of the Frick archives and established
    17  the Helen Clay Frick Foundation, which provides for the


     1  preservation of her family's physical and intellectual property;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Helen Clay Frick demonstrated true concern for the
     4  welfare of the Frick Family historical records, and numerous
     5  qualified institutions exist in the western Pennsylvania region
     6  that are capable of maintaining these records; and
     7     WHEREAS, To retain these papers in the Pittsburgh vicinity
     8  along with other notable families and businesses, such as Heinz,
     9  Westinghouse, Carnegie and Mellon, is consequential to the
    10  public good and ensures that Pittsburgh continue to be a major
    11  center for historical research; and
    12     WHEREAS, Presently stored at the Frick Art and Historical
    13  Center in Point Breeze, Pennsylvania, these archives should be
    14  given a safe and permanent home in which they can be catalogued
    15  and secured and where access is provided to the public; and
    16     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives has an obligation to
    17  uphold the preservation of Pennsylvania history by safeguarding
    18  this historical property; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Helen
    20  Clay Frick Foundation to retain the Frick Family Archives in
    21  western Pennsylvania; and be it further
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
    23  Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and other archival
    24  institutions to work cooperatively with the Helen Clay Frick
    25  Foundation in order to maintain the Frick Family Archives in the
    26  Pittsburgh region.
