A RESOLUTION 1 Commemorating on July 1, 2 and 3, 2003, the 140th anniversary of 2 the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, In July of 1863, the turning point of the American 4 Civil War occurred at the Battle of Gettysburg; and 5 WHEREAS, General Robert E. Lee's 75,000-man Army of Northern 6 Virginia and General George G. Meade's 97,000-man Union Army of 7 the Potomac met; and 8 WHEREAS, Of the more than 2,000 land engagements of the Civil 9 War, Gettysburg ranks supreme and remains the great battle of 10 the war; and 11 WHEREAS, The Battle of Gettysburg has become known as the 12 "High Water Mark of the Confederacy"; and 13 WHEREAS, There were 51,000 casualties, making Gettysburg the
1 bloodiest battle of American history; and 2 WHEREAS, At Gettysburg on July 1, 2 and 3, 1863, more men 3 actually fought and more men died than in any other battle 4 before or since on North American soil; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the 6 140th anniversary on July 1, 2 and 3, 2003, of the Battle of 7 Gettysburg in Pennsylvania.
