A RESOLUTION
1 Urging the United States Army Corps of Engineers to study the
2 effects of the 2004 wet weather events in the Little Lehigh
3 Creek Watershed, Berks and Lehigh Counties, Pennsylvania, to
4 reevaluate the existing flood control projects in the area
5 and make recommendations on future flood control measures.
6 WHEREAS, The Little Lehigh Creek Watershed has approximately
7 88.8 square miles of drainage basin located in Lehigh County and
8 approximately 18.7 square miles located in Berks County,
9 Pennsylvania; and
10 WHEREAS, The Little Lehigh Creek Watershed supplies drinking
11 water to approximately 137,000 people in the City of Allentown
12 and surrounding areas in the form of 7 million gallons per day
13 of creek or surface water and 10 million gallons per day of
14 groundwater; and
15 WHEREAS, Consecutive hurricanes in September 2004 created
16 peak discharges for the Little Lehigh Creek Watershed; and
17 WHEREAS, The floods of September 2004 were among the largest
1 floods of record in the Little Lehigh Creek Watershed; and
2 WHEREAS, Homes, businesses and industries along the Little
3 Lehigh Creek Watershed were affected by large-scale flooding
4 events in 2004; therefore be it
5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
6 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the United States Army Corps
7 of Engineers to conduct a reconnaissance study and propose a new
8 flood protection plan which includes expansion of current
9 efforts within the Little Lehigh Creek Watershed region.
