INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 30, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Commending those who advocate and promote organ and tissue 2 donation in this Commonwealth. 3 WHEREAS, Each organ and tissue donor can donate the heart, 4 kidneys, pancreas, lungs, liver, stomach, intestines, corneas, 5 skin, bone, heart valves, tendons, ligaments, veins and blood 6 vessels; and 7 WHEREAS, Each person who donates organs and tissue can 8 potentially save up to 50 lives and take people off a transplant 9 waiting list; and 10 WHEREAS, An average of 17 people die each day in the United 11 States waiting for lifesaving organ and tissue transplants; and 12 WHEREAS, The transplant waiting list has more than doubled in
1 the past ten years in the United States, with more than 88,000 2 men, women and children on the list; and 3 WHEREAS, Approximately 6,100 Pennsylvanians are awaiting 4 lifesaving organ donations for their survival; and 5 WHEREAS, Each year approximately 10,000 to 12,000 medically 6 suitable donors die; and 7 WHEREAS, Each year approximately 7,000 individuals give the 8 gift of life through organ and tissue donation after death; and 9 WHEREAS, Pediatric organ donation transplantation can have a 10 significant life-extending benefit for children and has a high 11 emotional impact on donor and recipient families; and 12 WHEREAS, Children from birth to 17 years of age account for 13 approximately 3% of the waiting list; and 14 WHEREAS, The death of a child is often not foreseen, and many 15 parents have not considered the possibility of organ donation 16 for their child's organs; therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend those 18 Pennsylvanians who have advocated organ and tissue donation and 19 promoted awareness of organ and tissue donation across this 20 Commonwealth; and be it further 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage 22 Pennsylvanians to consider organ and tissue donation with their 23 entire family, including pediatric organ donation if necessary, 24 and to continue their efforts to spread awareness of organ and 25 tissue donation.
