A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of September 16 through 22, 2007, as 2 "Pennsylvania Cable Heritage Week." 3 WHEREAS, Cable technology and today's cable industry began in 4 the valleys of eastern Pennsylvania 60 years ago; and 5 WHEREAS, The rapid growth of entrepreneurial cable operators 6 in all corners of this Commonwealth provided Pennsylvanians with 7 cable television service in advance of consumers in most other 8 states; and 9 WHEREAS, Independent, family-owned cable operators in this 10 Commonwealth continue to outnumber operators in other states, 11 joining with multiple-system operators to serve 3.6 million 12 Pennsylvanians with communications and entertainment services; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's cable operators employ more than
1 11,000 Pennsylvanians while providing free services to 2,500 2 primary and secondary schools and hundreds of community 3 establishments; and 4 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's first widespread deployment of 5 broadband services came from the cable operators, who continue 6 to serve all municipalities and neighborhoods regardless of 7 income or social status; and 8 WHEREAS, The industry's trade association in Pennsylvania, 9 launched 50 years ago as the nation's first State society 10 representing cable operators, began as the Pennsylvania 11 Community Antenna Television Association; and 12 WHEREAS, The association's members developed and deployed 13 evolving telecommunications technology for Pennsylvanians, 14 leading to one of the State's first broadband entities; and 15 WHEREAS, The Broadband Cable Association of Pennsylvania is 16 holding Cable Heritage 2007 during its golden anniversary year 17 in Bethlehem, home of Service Electric, widely acknowledged to 18 be the nation's first cable operator; therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 20 week of September 16 through 22, 2007, as "Pennsylvania Cable 21 Heritage Week" to recognize the outstanding contributions and 22 commitment of cable operators, suppliers and programmers serving 23 the Keystone State and the half-century of support provided by 24 the Broadband Cable Association of Pennsylvania.
