        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 15, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating April 2000 as "Pennsylvania Organ and Tissue Donor
     2     Awareness Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Organ and tissue transplantation has been recognized
     4  as a corrective and lifesaving medical procedure; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has 14 transplant centers and is
     6  recognized as a world leader in organ and tissue
     7  transplantation; and
     8     WHEREAS, It is estimated that as of January 31, 2000, there
     9  were 67,340 people waiting for organ transplants in the United
    10  States; and

     1     WHEREAS, Approximately ten people die per day in the United
     2  States awaiting an organ transplant; and
     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania law enables citizens to donate their
     4  organs and tissues through written statements and also allows
     5  relatives to consent to the donation of organs and tissues of a
     6  deceased family member; and
     7     WHEREAS, A vital component of the continuation and
     8  advancement of organ transplantation is the retrieval of donor
     9  organs and tissues; and
    10     WHEREAS, Improved surgical techniques and drugs to offset
    11  rejection of organs have resulted in a high success rate; and
    12     WHEREAS, The number of people in need of transplants far
    13  exceeds the number of organs and the amount of tissue available;
    14  therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    16  month of April 2000 as "Pennsylvania Organ and Tissue Donor
    17  Awareness Month"; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
    19  Pennsylvanians to carry donor cards and discuss this decision
    20  with family members and friends.
