A RESOLUTION

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar

2

landing mission.

3

WHEREAS, Following the Soviet Union's successful launch of

4

Sputnik in 1957, the great Space Race involving the United

5

States and the former Soviet Union effectively began, fueling

6

the rivalry between both nations during the Cold War; and

7

WHEREAS, Space officially became the new frontier for both

8

nations as they fought tirelessly to demonstrate superiority in

9

rocketry and spaceflight; and

10

WHEREAS, Presenting a bold challenge before a joint session

11

of the United States Congress, President John F. Kennedy

12

announced that "... this nation should commit itself to

13

achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man

14

on the moon and returning him safely to the earth"; and

WHEREAS, On July 20, 1969, in an event watched by more than

2

500 million people around the world, Mission Commander Neil

3

Armstrong and Command Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin took mankind’s

4

first steps on the moon; and

5

WHEREAS, With Commander Armstrong's immortal words "That's

6

one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," our

7

nation's leadership in space exploration was solidified; and

8

WHEREAS, The Apollo 11 mission continues to improve our lives

9

by inspiring new advancements in technology and science;

10

therefore be it

11

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the

12

40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission on July

13

20, 2009.
