INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 6, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Calling on the citizens of this Commonwealth to assure that 2 every child is in a safe place reading together with a caring 3 adult on the evening of March 1, 2002. 4 WHEREAS, The citizens of this Commonwealth stand firmly 5 committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' 6 future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of 7 the future and their ability to compete in a global economy; and 8 WHEREAS, The public school employees have provided 9 significant leadership in the area of community involvement in 10 the education of our youth, grounded in the principle that 11 educational investment is key to the community's well-being and
1 long-term quality of life; and 2 WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across 3 America" program is a national celebration of Dr. Seuss's 4 birthday on March 1 that promotes reading and adult involvement 5 in the education of our community's students; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives call on the 7 citizens of this Commonwealth to assure that every child is in a 8 safe place reading together with a caring adult on the evening 9 of March 1, 2002; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives enthusiastically 11 endorse the National Education Association's "Read Across 12 America" program and recommit this Commonwealth to engage in 13 programs and activities to make America's children the best 14 readers in the world.
