A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of September 2009 as "Childhood Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, When a child receives a diagnosis of cancer and

4

begins treatment, this begins one of the most frightening and

5

stressful experiences the child's parents can endure; and

6

WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease

7

among children and is second only to accidents as a cause of

8

death for children; and

9

WHEREAS, This year in the United States, more than 10,000

10

children less than 15 years of age will be diagnosed with cancer

11

and, tragically, 1,500 of these will most likely die; and

WHEREAS, The loss of life of just one innocent child due to

2

cancer is one too many, and is a tragic event that is more than

3

most parents can bear; and

4

WHEREAS, Genetics can play a part in the development of

5

cancer in children, however, many of the causes and risk factors

6

of childhood cancer are not known; and

7

WHEREAS, Children can suffer from numerous types of cancer,

8

including Acute Lymphomatic Leukemia, bone cancer, brain cancer,

9

Ewing's Sarcoma, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma,

10

Neuroblastoma, Osteosarcoma, Retinoblastoma, Rhabdomyosarcoma

11

and Wilms' Tumor; and

12

WHEREAS, Children tend to develop different types of cancer

13

than adults, and survival rates vary considerably depending on

14

the cancer type involved; and

15

WHEREAS, New and improved treatments, and significant patient

16

participation in clinical trials, have led to substantial

17

progress in pediatric cancer survival rates; and

18

WHEREAS, In recent decades, the five-year relative survival

19

rate for all childhood cancers combined has greatly improved,

20

having increased from approximately 50% prior to the 1970s to

21

80% today; and

22

WHEREAS, Although great strides have been made in the search

23

for childhood cancer cures, more research is needed to

24

completely eliminate this potentially deadly disease in all of

25

its varied forms; and

26

WHEREAS, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is a national event

27

observed in September of each year by concerned citizens and

28

public interest groups across the United States toward achieving

29

this goal; therefore be it

30

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

month of September 2009 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" in

2

Pennsylvania, and encourage all citizens of this Commonwealth to

3

support the fight to eliminate childhood cancer by participating

4

in scheduled events and contributing to research programs

5

designed to find cures for pediatric cancers.
