INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 30, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2007 as "Lung Cancer Awareness 2 Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in 4 Pennsylvania, the United States and the world; and 5 WHEREAS, Lung cancer will be responsible for more American 6 deaths in 2007 than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, There are an estimated 173,000 new cases of lung 9 cancer and an estimated 428 deaths from lung cancer each day in 10 the United States; and 11 WHEREAS, Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, yet
1 former smokers and persons who have never smoked comprise 60% of 2 new cases of lung cancer each year; and 3 WHEREAS, Other causes of lung cancer include exposure to 4 cancer-causing substances or carcinogens, such as asbestos, 5 radon, uranium, arsenic and certain petroleum products; and 6 WHEREAS, Symptoms of lung cancer include chronic cough, 7 hoarseness, coughing up blood, weight loss and loss of appetite, 8 shortness of breath, fever without a known reason, wheezing, 9 repeated bouts of bronchitis or pneumonia and chest pain; and 10 WHEREAS, In the early stages of lung cancer, these symptoms 11 are usually absent, although when the symptoms occur, the cancer 12 is most often advanced; and 13 WHEREAS, There is currently no standard or cost-effective 14 screening procedure for lung cancer; and 15 WHEREAS, Funding for lung cancer medical research falls far 16 short of that for other less fatal diseases; and 17 WHEREAS, To help build awareness and save lives, the Lung 18 Cancer Alliance, a national patient advocacy group for lung 19 cancer dedicated to helping build awareness of this disease, has 20 proclaimed November as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month"; and 21 WHEREAS, It is only fitting and proper for this Commonwealth 22 to join the nation in designating November as "Lung Cancer 23 Awareness Month" so that through better education, more cases of 24 lung cancer may be found in the early stages, when the chance of 25 long-term survival is enhanced; therefore be it 26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 27 month of November 2007 as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month" in 28 Pennsylvania to promote greater public awareness, enhance 29 education, erase the stigma and increase early diagnosis of this 30 disease in order to reduce health costs and to save lives in 20070H0490R2780 - 2 -
