INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 9, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating October 17, 2009, as "Military Family Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, There are approximately 56,000 active duty military,

4

National Guard, Air National Guard and Reserve personnel in

5

Pennsylvania, not including persons who choose to leave distant

6

military bases to return to extended families during military

7

deployments; and

8

WHEREAS, There is a large contingent of Federal civil service

9

employees who work and reside in Pennsylvania and who volunteer

10

or are directed to serve overseas in support of the war on

11

terror; and

WHEREAS, More than 5,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen

2

from the 28th Combat Aviation Brigade were deployed to Iraq, and

3

this Commonwealth has already begun to see a return of some of

4

these soldiers and airmen, but the majority will return home in

5

the coming months; and

6

WHEREAS, The deployment of these Pennsylvania National Guard

7

units to Iraq represents the largest National Guard deployment

8

during wartime since World War II; and

9

WHEREAS, Families of persons serving in support of the war on

10

terror make untold and anonymous sacrifices every day on behalf

11

of their husbands, wives, sons and daughters and endure extended

12

deployments of their loved ones; and

13

WHEREAS, Military family members make their homes throughout

14

this Commonwealth; and

15

WHEREAS, These persons often lack support systems and access

16

to facilities available to military families living on or near

17

major military bases; and

18

WHEREAS, Although this Commonwealth and its communities have

19

extended overwhelming support to deployed military members, many

20

people are unaware that military families with unique needs

21

reside in their communities; and

22

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has a very large veteran and retired

23

military population whose families merit recognition for their

24

past sacrifices; and

25

WHEREAS, It is right and proper to express appreciation for

26

the sacrifices of these families; and

27

WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians should reach out to help military

28

families during their difficult separations; therefore be it

29

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October

30

17, 2009, as "Military Family Day" in Pennsylvania.
