A RESOLUTION

Declaring the month of November 2009 as "Pancreatic Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, More than 37,000 people will be diagnosed with

4

pancreatic cancer this year in the United States and an

5

estimated 34,000 will die from the disease; and

6

WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest type of

7

cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the

8

United States; and

9

WHEREAS, Approximately 1,920 deaths will occur in this

10

Commonwealth; and

11

WHEREAS, Seventy-five percent of pancreatic cancer patients

will die within the first year of their diagnosis and 95% of

2

pancreatic cancer patients will die within the first five years;

3

and

4

WHEREAS, There is no cure for pancreatic cancer and there

5

have been no significant improvements in early detection,

6

treatment methods or survival rates in the last 25 years; and

7

WHEREAS, When symptoms of pancreatic cancer present

8

themselves, it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis,

9

and the average life expectancy of those diagnosed with

10

metastasis disease is only three to six months; and

11

WHEREAS, Incidence of pancreatic cancer is 20% to 30% higher

12

in men than in women and 40% to 50% higher in African Americans

13

than in other ethnic groups; and

14

WHEREAS, The Federal Government invests less money in

15

pancreatic cancer research than it does in any other leading

16

cancer; and

17

WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of

18

this Commonwealth are enhanced as a direct result of increased

19

awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early

20

detection, causes and effective treatments; and

21

WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the first

22

and only national patient advocacy organization that serves the

23

pancreatic cancer community in Pennsylvania and nationwide by

24

focusing its efforts on public policy, developing effective

25

treatments and a cure for pancreatic cancer; and

26

WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its

27

affiliates in this Commonwealth support those patients currently

28

battling pancreatic cancer, as well as those who have lost their

29

lives to the disease and are committed to nothing less than a

30

cure; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representative designate the

2

month of November 2009 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in

3

Pennsylvania.
