A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the importance and valuable service of pediatric
shift nurses to children with complex medical needs in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Home health agencies in Pennsylvania provide
pediatric shift nursing to help children with complex medical
needs live as independently as possible at home with their
families; and
WHEREAS, The key benefit of pediatric shift nursing care is
that a child can receive care outside of a hospital and into
their own home with their family, regardless of the medical
equipment necessary for their care; and
WHEREAS, Pediatric shift nurses are registered nurses and
licensed practical nurses who are able to administer prescribed
medication and ensure that a child's condition remains stable;
and
WHEREAS, Pediatric shift nurses become a lifeline to families
who need the support and assistance so that parents can continue

to work and siblings can continue to participate in school and
community activities; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the Commonwealth, there are 3,507
children who are eligible to receive pediatric shift nursing;
and
WHEREAS, There is a severe shortage of pediatric shift nurses
available to provide this in-home care to children; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Homecare Association has published
a guide to help families as they navigate a life requiring a
pediatric shift nurse; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
importance and valuable service of pediatric shift nurses to
children with complex medical needs in Pennsylvania.
