        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 31, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the anniversary of "The Star Spangled Banner" on
     2     September 14, 2000.

     3     WHEREAS, Our national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner," was
     4  written by an American lawyer, Francis Scott Key, during the War
     5  of 1812; and
     6     WHEREAS, Francis Scott Key wrote the words while witnessing
     7  the British naval attack on Baltimore at Fort McHenry on
     8  September 12 and 13, 1814; and
     9     WHEREAS, "The Star Spangled Banner" was officially designated
    10  our national anthem on March 31, 1931; and


     1     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania adopted September
     2  14 as National Anthem Day in 1947; therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate
     4  September 14, 2000, as the 186th Anniversary of "The Star
     5  Spangled Banner."
