| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Latrobe, Pennsylvania, resident Arnold Palmer on his |
2 | 80th birthday and congratulating him on the many |
3 | accomplishments of his life. |
4 | WHEREAS, Arnold Palmer was born on September 10, 1929, in |
5 | Latrobe, a city that he still calls home; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer began swinging his first set of golf |
7 | clubs when he was four years old and soon was playing well |
8 | enough to beat the older caddies at the Latrobe Country Club; |
9 | and |
10 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer won his first of five West Penn Amateur |
11 | Championships at 17 years of age, competed successfully in |

1 | national junior events and went to Wake Forest College, where he |
2 | became the number one man on the golf team and one of the |
3 | leading collegiate players of that time; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer represents many things to many people, |
5 | including a world famous golf immortal and sportsman, a highly |
6 | successful business executive, a prominent advertising |
7 | spokesman, a skilled aviator, a talented golf course designer |
8 | and consultant and a devoted husband, father and grandfather; |
9 | and |
10 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer amassed 92 championships in professional |
11 | competition of national or international stature by the end of |
12 | 1993, and 61 of his victories came on the United States PGA |
13 | Tour, starting with the 1955 Canadian Open; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer won the Masters Tournament in 1958, 1960, |
15 | 1962 and 1964, the United States Open in 1960 at Cherry Hills |
16 | Country Club in Denver, Colorado, and the British Open in 1961 |
17 | and 1962; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer is president of Arnold Palmer |
19 | Enterprises, a multidivision structure encompassing much of his |
20 | global commercial activity; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer has been involved in automobile and |
22 | aviation service firms in Charlotte, North Carolina, and |
23 | elsewhere around this nation for many years; and |
24 | WHEREAS, Since the mid-1960s, Mr. Palmer has put his stamp on |
25 | some 200 new golf courses throughout the nation and world; and |
26 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer has received virtually every national |
27 | award in golf, and after his great 1960 season he earned both |
28 | the Hickok Athlete of the Year and Sports Illustrated's |
29 | Sportsman of the Year trophies; and |
30 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer is a charter member of the World Golf |

1 | Hall of Fame and a member of the American Golf Hall of Fame at |
2 | Foxburg and the PGA Hall of Fame in Florida, and he is chairman |
3 | of the USGA Members Program and served as Honorary National |
4 | Chairman of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation for 20 |
5 | years; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer played a major role in the fundraising |
7 | drive that led to the creation of the Arnold Palmer Hospital for |
8 | Children and Women in Orlando, Florida, in the 1980s and as a |
9 | longtime member of the Board of Directors of Latrobe Area |
10 | Hospital, he established a major annual fundraising golf event |
11 | for that institution in 1992; and |
12 | WHEREAS, President Barack Obama personally awarded Arnold |
13 | Palmer the Congressional Gold Medal at a White House ceremony on |
14 | September 29, 2009; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer was just the second professional golfer |
16 | to receive the medal, which is awarded by an act of Congress. |
17 | The medals are Congress' highest expression of national |
18 | appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions; |
19 | therefore be it |
20 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Arnold |
21 | Palmer on the occasion of his 80th birthday and congratulate him |
22 | on the many accomplishments of his life. |
