INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 13, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating June 28, 2000, as "USS ESTOCIN Day" in Pennsylvania. 2 WHEREAS, On January 10, 1981, the United States Navy 3 commissioned the ninth ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class 4 guided missile frigates, namely the USS ESTOCIN, in honor of 5 Congressional Medal of Honor winner, Captain Michael John 6 Estocin, USN; and 7 WHEREAS, The ESTOCIN's mission is to provide in-depth 8 protection for military and merchant shipping, carrier battle 9 groups, amphibious task forces and underway replenishment groups 10 on the sea, under the sea and in the air; and 11 WHEREAS, The ESTOCIN's engineering and combat systems suites 12 were new and innovative and her unique gas turbine propulsion 13 system is brought on line and ready to get underway in less than 14 ten minutes; and 15 WHEREAS, The ESTOCIN's assignments have taken her to the 16 Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, the Central American coast, the 17 Baltic Sea, the Caribbean and South America; and
1 WHEREAS, The ESTOCIN has participated in many defense 2 exercises and counter-drug operations, including exercises with 3 other ships from the United States and Venezuelan and Colombian 4 navies, and participated with Brazilian and other naval units in 5 honor of the 500th anniversary of the founding of Brazil in 6 April 2000; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 8 28, 2000, as "USS ESTOCIN Day" in Pennsylvania.
