A RESOLUTION
Urging the Congress of the United States to pass House Res.
1773, which would award the Congressional Gold Medal
collectively to the women who joined the "Rosie the Riveter"
campaign during World War II.
WHEREAS, During World War II, over 6 million women joined the
workforce to manufacture aircraft, vehicles, weaponry,
ammunition and other materials needed for the war after men in
those positions left to fight in the war; and
WHEREAS, Thousands of these women worked in Pennsylvania,
building ships in Philadelphia, working in steel mills in
Pittsburgh, assembling anti-aircraft guns in York, producing
heavy trucks at the Mack Manufacturing Plant in Allentown and
overhauling battle-worn planes at the Harrisburg Shops in
Middletown; and
WHEREAS, These women often faced harassment from male
colleagues and disapproval from family members while still
maintaining personal and family obligations; and

WHEREAS, Women of color overcame long-held policies of
discrimination and made significant contributions to the war
effort; and
WHEREAS, The women who embraced the "Rosie the Riveter"
campaign are truly among the greatest living heroines in the
United States, as they worked and sacrificed to strengthen our
country during World War II; and
WHEREAS, The example these women set during World War II
continues to inspire and symbolizes the empowerment of women
today; and
WHEREAS, Women and young girls today can look toward these
trailblazing women as an inspiration to serve and strengthen our
country and Commonwealth and strive to attain positions of
leadership in all areas of life; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Congress of the United
States to pass House Res. 1773, which would award the
Congressional Gold Medal collectively to the women who joined
the "Rosie the Riveter" campaign during World War II; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the presiding officers of each House of Congress and each member
of Congress from Pennsylvania.
