A RESOLUTION

Expressing support for establishing a National Women's History

2

Museum in Washington, DC.

3

WHEREAS, In 1987, the Congress of the United States

4

designated the month of March as "Women's History Month" to

5

acknowledge the important role women have played in shaping

6

America; and

7

WHEREAS, Although women constitute a majority of the nation's

8

population their achievements and contributions are

9

underrepresented in museums and memorials; and

10

WHEREAS, Women comprise only 10% of all persons identified in

11

a recent survey of 18 history textbooks; and

12

WHEREAS, In 1999, the President's Commission on the

13

Celebration of Women in American History called for a women's

14

history museum to be established on the National Mall in

15

Washington, DC; and

16

WHEREAS, The National Women's History Museum (NWHM), founded

17

in 1996, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational institution

dedicated to preserving, interpreting and celebrating the

2

diverse historic contributions of women and integrating the

3

heritage of women fully into our nation's history; and

4

WHEREAS, The NWHM seeks a site on or close to the National

5

Mall and in close proximity to the White House and United States

6

Capitol Building; and

7

WHEREAS, The NWHM has identified federally owned property for

8

sale near the National Mall; and

9

WHEREAS, Legislation is currently pending in Congress seeking

10

authorization for the NWHM to purchase this property at fair

11

market value with privately raised funds; and

12

WHEREAS, No Federal funds are being requested for the

13

purchase of this land; and

14

WHEREAS, There are museums dedicated to flight, postage

15

stamps, buildings and many other important individuals and

16

issues of interest but not to women, who comprise 51% of our

17

nation's population; and

18

WHEREAS, The NWHM will showcase the full history of women in

19

the United States and the significant contributions they have

20

made and continue to make in the marketplace, arts and sciences,

21

government, entertainment, education, home and community; and

22

WHEREAS, A coalition of 43 women's organizations representing

23

8 million women, including the National Foundation for Women

24

Legislators, supports the efforts of the NWHM to establish a

25

permanent residence near the National Mall, the most prominent

26

location for museums in our nation's capital; therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

28

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania request that the Congress support

29

the NWHM's efforts to secure a permanent home in our nation's

30

capital for a museum highlighting the important role women have

played in shaping this great nation; and be it further

2

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

3

the presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each

4

member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
