INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 27, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of October 15 through 21, 2000, as "Radon 2 Action Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Exposure to radon poses significant health risks and 4 is considered to be the second leading cause of lung cancer next 5 to smoking, and smoking combined with elevated indoor radon 6 levels is an especially serious health risk; and 7 WHEREAS, An estimated 40% of Pennsylvania homes have radon 8 levels greater than the national guideline of 4.0 pCi/L annual 9 average, and 49 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties have predicted 10 average indoor radon levels greater than 4.0 pCi/L; and 11 WHEREAS, As part of the Environmental Protection Agency's 12 1999 State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG) program, the Department of
1 Environmental Protection is conducting a public awareness 2 campaign in connection with "National Radon Action Week"; and 3 WHEREAS, Under the SIRG program the Pennsylvania Department 4 of Environmental Protection awarded various Radon Awareness 5 Grants for projects to increase public and professional 6 awareness about the health risks associated with exposure to 7 radon and the need for increased testing and mitigation of radon 8 exposure to such organizations as the American Lung Association 9 of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, 10 the Mid Atlantic Environmental Hygiene Resource Center and 11 Central Penn Parent; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week 13 of October 15 through 21, 2000, as "Radon Action Week" in 14 Pennsylvania.
