        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 3, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commending the efforts of AIDS Alive-SpeakUp 2000.

     2     WHEREAS, On Saturday, October 7, 2000, AIDS Alive is holding
     3  an all-day conference, SpeakUp 2000, for urban and suburban
     4  youth, educators and parents and guardians to come together for
     5  a common educational goal; and
     6     WHEREAS, SpeakUp 2000 will emphasize the development of
     7  communication skills to foster productive dialogue at home, at
     8  school and within the community to enable participants to make
     9  positive choices in order to make a difference; and
    10     WHEREAS, SpeakUp 2000 addresses some of the issues that
    11  concern all of us today; and
    12     WHEREAS, Twenty-three regional organizations have joined in
    13  the undertaking; and
    14     WHEREAS, The mission of SpeakUp 2000 is to empower all
    15  participants to make informed decisions for positive life

     1  choices; and
     2     WHEREAS, SpeakUp 2000 is committed to change - a change for
     3  the better in the relationships of youth, educators and parents
     4  and guardians; and
     5     WHEREAS, SpeakUp 2000 has the following partners:
     6         Advancement for Delaware Valley Independent Schools
     7         Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Youth Association
     8         CYO Leadership Institute
     9         Center for Greater Philadelphia
    10         Center for Youth Development
    11         Champions of Caring
    12         City Year
    13         Comcast Cable Communications
    14         Family Forum
    15         Family Resource Network
    16         Future Search
    17         Lower Merion School District
    18         MADD/Mothers Against Drunk Driving
    19         Parents of Murdered Children
    20         Partnership for a Drug Free America
    21         Passionate Leaders
    22         Philadelphia's Promise
    23         Philadelphia Board of Education
    24         PTA - Philadelphia School District
    25         Roman Catholic High School
    26         Safe & Sound
    27         SILOAM Ministries;
    28  and
    29     WHEREAS, The effort of SpeakUp 2000 to bring together youth,
    30  educators and parents and guardians and the entire community to

     1  foster such a vital dialogue deserves great recognition; and
     2     WHEREAS, By providing this safe forum to discuss, among other
     3  things, the issues of eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse,
     4  AIDS, violence and crime, a platform for moral strength will be
     5  achieved; and
     6     WHEREAS, AIDS Alive and the 23 regional organizations have
     7  worked tirelessly to make the conference a reality; and
     8     WHEREAS, Martie Gillin and the staff of AIDS Alive deserve
     9  special congratulations and a salute for the months of hard work
    10  and devotion in organizing this event; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend AIDS
    12  Alive-SpeakUp 2000 on its efforts to improve the lives of youth,
    13  educators and parents and guardians and wish it continued
    14  success in all of its future endeavors.
