A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of November 2017 as "Lung Cancer Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The number of deaths due to lung cancer in the
United States is more than all those combined from colon,
breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers, making it the leading
cause of cancer deaths in this country; and
WHEREAS, The number of deaths due to lung cancer increased by
more than 4% between 1999 and 2008, from 152,156 to 158,656; and
WHEREAS, While cigarette smoking is the primary cause of
almost 90% of lung cancer cases, exposure to radon is the second
leading cause of lung cancer deaths annually; and
WHEREAS, Other factors include exposure to cigarette smoke
and occupational exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos,
uranium and coke; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Lung Association, an
estimated 160,340 individuals in the United States have
