                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of October 29 through November 5, 2000, as
     2     "Pornography Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Pornography presents youth with a false and
     4  distorted image of human sexuality, devoid of love, commitment
     5  and responsibility; and
     6     WHEREAS, Much pornography features and promotes sexual
     7  violence and other antisocial behavior in an era of increasing
     8  sexual violence and an epidemic of sexually transmitted
     9  diseases; and
    10     WHEREAS, So-called "adult" pornography is commonly used by
    11  pedophiles to desensitize children and break down their
    12  resistance to sexual acts; and
    13     WHEREAS, Children molest other children in imitation of what
    14  they have seen in pornography; and
    15     WHEREAS, There are Federal and State obscenity laws against

     1  illegal hardcore pornography to protect public safety, public
     2  health and public morality; and
     3     WHEREAS, These obscenity laws are grounded in contemporary
     4  community standards of decency; and
     5     WHEREAS, The United States Supreme Court has held that
     6  obscenity is not protected speech under the First Amendment; and
     7     WHEREAS, Within our communities, the exploitation and
     8  objectification of women and children that is indicative of
     9  pornographic material must be addressed. As a society of
    10  individuals, it is our responsibility to exercise our rights and
    11  maintain the standards that we hold dear; and
    12     WHEREAS, Morality in Media, a national not-for-profit
    13  interfaith organization, is the sponsor of the White Ribbon
    14  Against Pornography (WRAP) Campaign, a national effort to
    15  educate and involve concerned citizens against pornography;
    16  therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    18  week of October 29 through November 5, 2000, as "Pornography
    19  Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and encourage the display of
    20  white ribbons as symbols of community standards of decency and
    21  support of the enforcement of obscenity laws.
