        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 14, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of April 17 through 21, 2006, as
     2     "Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week" in Pennsylvania; and
     3     urging the Department of Education, local school districts
     4     and intermediate units to participate in the 15th annual
     5     Statewide Pennsylvania Academic Competition on April 21,
     6     2006.

     7     WHEREAS, The education of all Pennsylvania children is a
     8  major concern to the citizens of this Commonwealth and requires
     9  the use of creative and innovative means to focus attention upon
    10  this concern; and
    11     WHEREAS, Excellence displayed in athletic competition has
    12  long been recognized by societal and community rewards provided
    13  for that competition; and
    14     WHEREAS, Academic competition is an innovative and creative

     1  attempt to involve children, parents, educators and community
     2  members in an educational forum for excellence; and
     3     WHEREAS, Academic competition helps to hone the abilities and
     4  intellectual skills of students, as well as providing
     5  opportunities for incentives to continue the pursuit of
     6  excellence in education; and
     7     WHEREAS, A coordinated program of academic competition has
     8  not existed in this Commonwealth, except in isolated school
     9  district programs; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week
    11  of April 17 through 21, 2006, as "Pennsylvania Academic
    12  Competition Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    13     RESOLVED, That the Department of Education, local school
    14  districts and intermediate units are urged to actively
    15  participate in the finals of the 15th annual Statewide
    16  Pennsylvania Academic Competition to be held in the House of
    17  Representatives Chamber on April 21, 2006.
