A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of January 2018 as "Amblyopia Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Amblyopia can cause permanent vision loss if not
identified and treated early in life; and
WHEREAS, The detection of amblyopia in early childhood
increases the chances of successful treatment, especially if the
disorder is detected before a child reaches five years of age;
and
WHEREAS, Many forms of amblyopia are difficult to detect and
can be identified only through proper screening techniques; and
WHEREAS, The earlier children are identified as having
amblyopia, the sooner treatment can commence; and
WHEREAS, Fewer than 20% of preschool children are currently
being screened for vision problems, even though screening is a
service covered by many health insurance plans and health
maintenance organizations; and
