A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of April 19 through 25, 2020, as "Earth
Week" and recognizing April 22, 2020, as the 50th anniversary
of "Earth Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" was first held on April 22, 1970, in
response to a growing environmental movement that was concerned
about the continued deterioration of natural environments; and
WHEREAS, The 50th anniversary of "Earth Day" occurs on April
22, 2020; and
WHEREAS, On that first "Earth Day," more than 20 million
Americans demonstrated in support of the environment,
precipitating the creation of the United States Environmental
Protection Agency and the passage of numerous pieces of Federal
and state legislation aimed at protecting the environment; and
WHEREAS, Today, "Earth Day" is considered to be the largest
secular observance in the world and is celebrated by more than 1
