           APRIL 24, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commending Edwin Scholl for his four-year portrayal of Pvt. Hugh
     2     Hall in the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, Missouri,
     3     during the bicentennial commemoration as a member of the
     4     Lewis and Clark Expedition.

     5     WHEREAS, Edwin Scholl of North Wales, Pennsylvania, was a
     6  member of the reenactment group which followed the original
     7  Lewis and Clark Expedition, which reenactment spans the years
     8  2003 through 2006; and
     9     WHEREAS, The reenactors, known as the Discovery Expedition of
    10  St. Charles, Missouri, retraced the movements of the original
    11  Lewis and Clark Expedition through the area of the United States
    12  annexed by the Louisiana Purchase of 1803; and
    13     WHEREAS, Through the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles,
    14  Missouri, Mr. Scholl portrayed fellow Pennsylvanian Pvt. Hugh
    15  Hall, of Carlisle, who was a member of the original Lewis and

     1  Clark Expedition; and
     2     WHEREAS, Mr. Scholl began his role in Elizabeth, where many
     3  believe the expedition's keelboat was built, and traveled 22
     4  miles down the Monongahela River, 973 miles on the Ohio River
     5  and 192 miles up the Mississippi River to the winter encampment
     6  of 1803 at Camp Dubois, Illinois; and
     7     WHEREAS, In the spring of 2004 the reenactors then traveled
     8  1,500 miles up the Missouri River to the winter encampment of
     9  1804 at Fort Mandan, North Dakota; and
    10     WHEREAS, From Fort Mandan, the reenactors followed the
    11  Missouri River to its headwaters, then crossed the Bitterroot
    12  Mountains on horseback to Canoe Camp near Orofino, Idaho, where
    13  they built dugout canoes and paddled the canoes down the
    14  Clearwater River, to the Snake River, to the Columbia River and
    15  finally to the Pacific Ocean and Fort Clatsop, Oregon; and
    16     WHEREAS, The reenactors followed the Lewis and Clark journals
    17  by camping at the locations indicated in the journals and
    18  viewing the geographical features noted in the journals in an
    19  effort to be as realistic as possible and living the true Lewis
    20  and Clark experience; and
    21     WHEREAS, The reenactment drew large crowds during their
    22  8,000-mile journey and imparted unique Lewis and Clark
    23  educational information to thousands of school children and
    24  other interested visitors who arrived at their camps; and
    25     WHEREAS, Mr. Scholl gave up significant portions of his time
    26  and considerable costs for uniforms and accoutrements to
    27  recreate this famous expedition; therefore be it
    28     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend Edwin
    29  Scholl for portraying Pvt. Hugh Hall and for participating in
    30  the 2003-2006 reenactment of the historic Lewis and Clark

     1  Expedition throughout the upper portions of the Louisiana
     2  Purchase; and be it further
     3     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
     4  Edwin Scholl, P.O. Box 2434, Warminster PA 18974.
