A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks.
WHEREAS, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was
founded in New York City on February 16, 1868, by Charles
Algernon Sidney Vivian; and
WHEREAS, The Elks is a fraternal organization established for
social and philanthropic engagement that is dedicated to
charity, justice and patriotism; and
WHEREAS, In March 1868, the Elks began their philanthropic
work in this Commonwealth with the establishment of their second
lodge in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, On March 8, 1906, the Pennsylvania Elks State
Association was formed, encompassing more than 70 lodges in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Elks has disbursed more

than $3.6 billion in cash donations, goods and services to the
nation's veterans, disadvantaged persons, persons with
disabilities and civic programs; and
WHEREAS, In an effort to support youth programs, drug
awareness campaigns and programs for military, veterans and
homeless veterans, the Elks raised nearly $7 million in 2017;
and
WHEREAS, The Elks dedication to the community at large and
numerous worthy causes has demonstrated the organization's
invaluable contributions to this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
150th anniversary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of
Elks.
