| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life of civil rights leader Benjamin L. Hooks and |
2 | expressing condolences upon his death on April 15, 2010. |
3 | WHEREAS, Benjamin L. Hooks, 85, a lawyer and Baptist minister |
4 | who led lunch-counter sit-in demonstrations during the 1960s and |
5 | was a longtime leader of the National Association for the |
6 | Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as it struggled to find |
7 | its way in the post-civil rights era, died April 15 at his home |
8 | in Memphis Tennessee; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In a career spanning six decades, Reverend Hooks |
10 | achieved many milestones; in 1965, he became the first black |
11 | judge to sit on the bench of a Tennessee state court since |
12 | Reconstruction, and in 1972, he became the first black member of |
13 | the Federal Communications Commission where he championed |
14 | minority ownership of television and radio stations; and |
15 | WHEREAS, A charismatic orator, Reverend Hooks was a Baptist |

1 | minister in Memphis, Tennessee, and Detroit, Michigan, and sat |
2 | on the board of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.'s |
3 | Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 1977, Reverend Hooks succeeded Roy Wilkins as |
5 | executive director of the NAACP and led it through the post- |
6 | civil rights era, confronting and overcoming declining |
7 | membership and bolstering efforts for equal housing, affirmative |
8 | action and school integration through busing; and |
9 | WHEREAS, A man who could remember having to pack his lunch |
10 | for car trips because there were no eating places on his travel |
11 | route where "colored" were welcome to eat or use the restroom, |
12 | Reverend Hooks made our nation a better place for all people to |
13 | live, and for this he will be long remembered; therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of |
15 | civil rights leader Benjamin L. Hooks and express its |
16 | condolences upon his death on April 15, 2010. |
