A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of October 2012 as "LGBT History Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, For nearly two decades the month of October has been

4

recognized nationwide as "LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and

5

transgender) History Month"; and

6

WHEREAS, The month of October is celebrated as a time to

7

acknowledge and commemorate the historic contributions of LGBT

8

Americans and mark honest and authentic lives with National

9

Coming Out Day on October 11; and

10

WHEREAS, National organizations including GLAAD, the Human

11

Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the

12

National Education Association and Statewide organizations such

13

as Equality Pennsylvania and others have strongly endorsed LGBT

14

History Month; and

15

WHEREAS, LGBT Pennsylvanians, such as artist Andy Warhol,

16

environmentalist Rachel Carson, lyricist and theater producer

17

Stephen Sondheim and civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, have all

made important and long-lasting contributions to American

2

history and culture; and

3

WHEREAS, An increasing recognition of and appreciation for

4

our Nation's and our State's LGBT individuals will serve to

5

increase community understanding, equality and inclusiveness;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, We owe a great deal of gratitude to those persons

8

who have pioneered the way toward greater civil rights and

9

equality; and

10

WHEREAS, Months commemorating and honoring the LGBT members

11

of our community have been enacted in the past by United States

12

presidents, governors and mayors; and

13

WHEREAS, LGBT History Month draws our collective attention to

14

the experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender

15

Pennsylvanians, reminding us of the diverse and inclusive

16

principles upon which Pennsylvania and our great nation were

17

founded and have grown; therefore be it

18

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

19

month of October 2012 as "LGBT History Month" in Pennsylvania;

20

and be it further

21

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and

22

commend the observation of "LGBT History Month" to our citizenry

23

and to our culture and urge all Pennsylvanians to take the

24

opportunity to learn and reflect upon this nation's struggle for

25

equality and respect for all.
