A RESOLUTION
Designating August 20, 2018, as "King's Highway Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The King's Highway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is
the oldest continuously used road in the United States; and
WHEREAS, The King's Highway was commissioned circa 1660 by
King Charles II to connect America's English Colonies; and
WHEREAS, Originally stretching 1,300 miles from Charleston,
South Carolina, to Boston, Massachusetts, the King's Highway
played a vital role in the ultimate independence of the United
States from England; and
WHEREAS, The King's Highway runs on portions of a trail
created by the original indigenous tribes, including the Lenni-
Lenape, centuries ago; and
WHEREAS, Early settlers carried messages along this Native
American trail known as the Falls Path; and
WHEREAS, In 1781, American and French forces led by General

George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army,
and General Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de
Rochambeau, commander in chief of the French Army, marched along
the King's Highway to defeat the British at Yorktown; and
WHEREAS, A portion of the King's Highway was designated as
the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (W3R) and National
Historic Trail in 2009; and
WHEREAS, General George Washington marched up the King's
Highway to New York from Philadelphia for his presidential
inauguration on April 30, 1789; and
WHEREAS, The documentary film The King's Highway took home
the Best Feature Documentary prize at the 2016 First Glance Film
Festival in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, The film premiered at one of the last standing
theaters on the King's Highway, the Devon Theater, on August 20,
2016; and
WHEREAS, The Perelman Theater within the Kimmel Center for
the Performing Arts was the proud venue for the global premiere
of the film in December 2016; and
WHEREAS, All showings of the film were sold out, and since
then the film has caused quite a movement in historic
preservation; and
WHEREAS, The King's Highway Foundation, a nonprofit
organization, continues to educate the public on the history of
Northeast Philadelphia, preserve historic buildings and spread
awareness of the significance of the King's Highway to the
community; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August
20, 2018, as "King's Highway Day" in Pennsylvania.
