A RESOLUTION
Commemorating and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the
establishment of York College of Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, In 1767, Reverend John Andrews established York
County Academy to teach English, Latin and Greek to German
immigrants; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly provided the York County
Academy with an official charter 20 years later in 1787; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Small decided in 1871 to provide the people
of York County with an intellectual and moral education; and
WHEREAS, Through Samuel Small's generous contributions, the
York Collegiate Institute opened its doors in 1873; and
WHEREAS, York County Academy and York Collegiate Institute
began to form an organizational cooperation with a reciprocal
teaching agreement in 1929; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Johnson, the former principal at York

County Academy, and the York Collegiate Institute proposed
merging the two schools into a single junior college in 1940;
and
WHEREAS, York County Academy and York Collegiate Institute
merged in 1941 to become York Junior College; and
WHEREAS, In 1961, York Junior College relocated to Country
Club Road in York County and became fully accredited by the
Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; and
WHEREAS, On September 22, 1966, former York Junior College
President Dr. Ray Miller announced that York Junior College
would become York County's first four-year institution of higher
education; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, York Junior College successfully
established an accredited bachelor's degree program; and
WHEREAS, After the establishment of an accredited bachelor's
degree program, York Junior College became York College of
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, In the 50 years since York College of Pennsylvania
has been established, the institution has provided affordable
and quality education; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate and
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of York
College of Pennsylvania.
