| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Selecting, designating and adopting Pennsylvania sweet corn as |
2 | the official vegetable of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. |
3 | The General Assembly finds and declares that: |
4 | (1) Sweet corn is the leading vegetable crop in this |
5 | Commonwealth. |
6 | (2) Pennsylvania sweet corn production ranks in the top |
7 | ten nationally with more than 20,000 acres worth about $25 |
8 | million annually. |
9 | (3) About 90% of the sweet corn acreage is grown for |
10 | fresh market sales. |
11 | (4) The key to great tasting sweet corn is freshness |
12 | because the sugar in sweet corn rapidly begins turning to |
13 | starch within hours of being harvested. |
14 | (5) In the days of increasing food and fuel costs, sweet |
15 | corn represents a real food dollar bargain available at |
16 | economical prices at the height of the season in August. |
17 | (6) Sweet corn is a delicious ingredient in many recipes |
18 | or on its own. |

1 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
2 | hereby enacts as follows: |
3 | Section 1. Official State vegetable. |
4 | Pennsylvania sweet corn is hereby selected, designated and |
5 | adopted as the official vegetable of the Commonwealth of |
6 | Pennsylvania. |
7 | Section 2. Effective date. |
8 | This act shall take effect immediately. |
