A RESOLUTION 1 Directing Congress not to increase the Federal motor fuel tax. 2 WHEREAS, Some members of Congress have proposed significantly 3 increasing the Federal motor fuel tax as a deficit reduction 4 measure; and 5 WHEREAS, Such an increase in the Federal motor fuel tax is 6 not in the national interest and will create unemployment, 7 depress business activity, increase costs to all Americans by 8 raising the cost of transportation and seriously limit the 9 ability of the states to generate desperately needed highway 10 revenues; and 11 WHEREAS, An increase in the Federal motor fuel tax would fall 12 disproportionately on the nation's poor, on those who use 13 vehicles for work purposes, and on citizens living in states 14 where travel distances are greater and alternative 15 transportation in unavailable; and 16 WHEREAS, Higher Federal motor fuel taxes would raise domestic 17 transportation costs, cause American goods to be produced with
1 additional costs and adversely affect the ability of American 2 companies to compete with foreign exporters in overseas markets; 3 therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania oppose any increase 5 in the Federal motor fuel tax for deficit reduction and urge the 6 National Economic Commission to find other means of reducing the 7 Federal budget deficit that would have a less harmful effect on 8 citizens, businesses and state governments of the United States; 9 and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be sent to members 11 of the Pennsylvania delegation to the United States Senate and 12 House of Representatives.
