SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 70 Session of 1999


        INTRODUCED BY GREENLEAF, HOLL, TOMLINSON, BOSCOLA, MURPHY,
           O'PAKE, HART, KASUNIC, EARLL, THOMPSON AND TILGHMAN,
           APRIL 19, 1999

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 19, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of May 2 through 8, 1999, as "Chastity
     2     Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging participation
     3     in "Chastity Day" presentations for schools and youth groups.

     4     WHEREAS, Chastity promotes sexual self-control, self-esteem
     5  and self-respect, regardless of previous sexual behavior; and
     6     WHEREAS, Chastity places sexual intercourse within the
     7  context of marriage; and
     8     WHEREAS, Teenage pregnancy outside of marriage is a
     9  continuing problem in our society; and
    10     WHEREAS, Each year 1 million teenagers become pregnant, with
    11  about 70% of these teenage mothers unmarried and more than 40%
    12  of them school dropouts; and
    13     WHEREAS, Abstaining from sexual activity is the only certain
    14  way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted
    15  diseases and related emotional trauma; and
    16     WHEREAS, "Chastity Day" presentations have been delivered for
    17  numerous schools and youth groups, with an annual attendance of
    18  over 10,000 participants; and

     1     WHEREAS, Presentations are made by members of the Chastity
     2  Education Network under the Family Life Educational Foundation,
     3  experienced chastity educators and teens who provide peer
     4  testimony; and
     5     WHEREAS, Parent meetings are held to encourage the discussion
     6  of chastity in the home setting; and
     7     WHEREAS, Chastity education emphasizes the powerful effect
     8  that alcohol and drug use have in increasing vulnerability to
     9  sexual advances and preventing good decision making; therefore
    10  be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 2 through
    12  8, 1999, as "Chastity Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and
    13  encourage participation in "Chastity Day" presentations for
    14  schools and youth groups; and be it further
    15     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    16  the Family Life Educational Foundation.
