           SCARNATI, CONTI, D. WHITE, WAGNER, ARMSTRONG, BOSCOLA, COSTA,
           DENT, EARLL, GERLACH, GREENLEAF, ORIE, HOLL, KITCHEN,
           KUKOVICH, LOGAN, MELLOW, MUSTO, PICCOLA, SCHWARTZ, STACK,

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing June 2001 as "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The dairy industry in Pennsylvania represents the
     3  largest segment of the agricultural economy, with 9,700 dairy
     4  farms and more than 616,000 cows producing more than 10.9
     5  billion pounds of milk annually; and
     6     WHEREAS, Sales of milk from Pennsylvania farms generate more
     7  than $1.7 billion in farm income, which accounts for 39% of all
     8  agricultural income; and
     9     WHEREAS, Over $40 million in dairy products are exported
    10  annually; and
    11     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania currently ranks fourth nationally in
    12  milk production, third in ice cream manufacturing, third in
    13  butter manufacturing and sixth in cheese manufacturing; and
    14     WHEREAS, Milk is Pennsylvania's official beverage, and the
    15  milk produced annually by Pennsylvania dairy farms accounts for


     1  nearly 7% of the total milk production in the United States; and
     2     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians drink more than 282 million gallons
     3  of milk annually; and
     4     WHEREAS, Forty-five manufacturers of dairy products, 33 fluid
     5  milk processors and 22 milk producer dealers are located in
     6  Pennsylvania; and
     7     WHEREAS, Despite long hours of hard work, unpredictable
     8  prices, uncooperative weather and low rates of return on labor
     9  and capital investment, dairy farm families continue to produce
    10  and promote quality products for the nutrition and enjoyment of
    11  consumers; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's dairy industry has traditionally
    13  provided stability to rural economies and has been a source of
    14  pride for citizens across this Commonwealth who have the
    15  opportunity to enjoy rural landscapes and savor a variety of
    16  dairy products; and
    17     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians have celebrated the accomplishments
    18  of the dairy industry during the month of June for more than 60
    19  years; therefore be it
    20     RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the accomplishments of dairy
    21  farm families and the dairy industry and recognize June 2001 as
    22  "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    23     RESOLVED, That the Senate call upon the people of this
    24  Commonwealth to celebrate "Dairy Month" and to salute dairy farm
    25  families and the dairy industry for their contributions to
    26  agriculture and their dedication to providing affordable,
    27  quality products to consumers in this Commonwealth.
