SENATE RESOLUTION

        INTRODUCED BY ROCKS, SALVATORE, LOEPER, FUMO, JONES, LYNCH,
           FATTAH AND WILLIAMS, SEPTEMBER 27, 1989

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 27, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Relating to the widespread destruction and misery caused by
     2     Hurricane Hugo in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

     3     WHEREAS, On Monday, September 18, Hurricane Hugo hit Puerto
     4  Rico with savage winds approaching 125 mph and left behind
     5  nearly 28,000 people homeless and 29 dead; and
     6     WHEREAS, While it is still too soon to assess the total
     7  damage, the final figure will run into the millions of dollars--
     8  not even counting the personal tragedies being experienced by
     9  these citizens of the United States; and
    10     WHEREAS, Puerto Rico became part of the United States in
    11  1898, and its citizens received citizenship status through the
    12  Jones Act of 1917 and continue to proudly proclaim their
    13  allegiance to the United States of America; and
    14     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and its 3,000,000
    15  inhabitants--who are fellow brothers and sisters--need all forms
    16  of assistance as quickly as it can be mobilized; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania hereby urge all the


     1  legislative members of the General Assembly to lend their
     2  support to the relief effort; and encourage that all relief
     3  efforts--both monetary and in-kind contributions--be directed to
     4  the PUERTO RICAN DISASTER RELIEF FUND, c/o Office of the
     5  Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, 500-06 North 6th Street,
     6  Philadelphia, PA 19123; and be it further
     7     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately
     8  transmitted to Governor Robert Casey, to the presiding members
     9  of each house of Congress, to each member of Congress from
    10  Pennsylvania, to U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and John Heinz; and
    11  President George Bush.
