A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the week of April 30 through May 5, 2007, as
2 "Perfusionist Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Certified clinical perfusionists (CCPs) are trained
4 health professionals, having completed an accredited program and
5 having passed the national certification examination; and
6 WHEREAS, CCPs have been certified by the American Board of
7 Cardiovascular Perfusion and have proven, through education and
8 examination, a level of knowledge and clinical ability that
9 distinguishes them from other licensed professionals; and
10 WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, CCPs have provided life
11 support services to patients while they are undergoing open
12 heart and other complex surgery; and
13 WHEREAS, The primary role of a CCP in surgical procedures is
14 operating the heart-lung machine; and
15 WHEREAS, The CCP becomes the heart and lungs for the patient
16 while the surgeons and surgical team perform their healing task;
17 and
1 WHEREAS, While the patient's life is maintained by the heart-
2 lung machine, the CCP monitors the patient's oxygen status, is
3 responsible for maintaining the patient's total body blood flow
4 and administers medications, anesthetic agents and, when
5 necessary, blood and blood products; and
6 WHEREAS, CCPs are responsible for assembling, maintaining and
7 operating extracorporeal circulation and bypass equipment,
8 intra-aortic balloon pumps and other heart assist devices to
9 support or temporarily replace patients' cardiopulmonary
10 functions during open-heart surgery; and
11 WHEREAS, CCPs maintain patients' physiology and ensure
12 quality bypass care for residents of this Commonwealth during
13 intricate surgeries; and
14 WHEREAS, More than 250 CCPs ensure quality care for residents
15 of this Commonwealth; therefore be it
16 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of April 30
17 through May 5, 2007, as "Perfusionist Appreciation Week" in
18 Pennsylvania.
