A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of October 7 through 13, 2001, as "Fire 2 Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Cooking, heating and electrical fires represent 4 three of the nation's leading causes of home fires and are 5 collectively responsible for nearly one-half of all home fires 6 and almost one-third of the associated fire deaths; and 7 WHEREAS, The vast majority of home cooking, heating and 8 electrical fires can be prevented by taking simple safety 9 precautions; and 10 WHEREAS, Developing a home fire escape plan and practicing it 11 at least twice a year are crucial to escaping a fire safely; and 12 WHEREAS, Proper installation, testing and maintenance of 13 smoke alarms are parts of a thorough home fire escape plan; and 14 WHEREAS, By preventing the leading causes of home fires and 15 by developing and practicing a thorough home fire escape plan, 16 people can greatly reduce their risk to fire; and 17 WHEREAS, The Fire Prevention Week 2001 theme, "Cover Your
1 Bases & Strike Out Fire," teaches the public how to prevent 2 cooking, heating and electrical fires and encourages people to 3 develop a home fire escape plan that includes working smoke 4 alarms; and 5 WHEREAS, The fire services of this Commonwealth are dedicated 6 to the safety of life and property from the devastating effects 7 of fire; and 8 WHEREAS, The members of the fire services are joined by other 9 concerned citizens of this Commonwealth as well as businesses, 10 schools, service clubs and organizations in their fire safety 11 efforts; and 12 WHEREAS, "Fire Prevention Week" commemorates the Great 13 Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 persons, left 14 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings; 15 therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of October 7 17 through 13, 2001, as "Fire Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania; and 18 be it further 19 RESOLVED, That the people of this Commonwealth participate in 20 fire prevention activities at home, work and school and become 21 further educated in fire safety precautions which will enable 22 them to "Cover Your Bases & Strike Out Fire" and help prevent 23 fire emergencies.
