SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 136 Session of 2005


        INTRODUCED BY PICCOLA, ARMSTRONG, BOSCOLA, BRIGHTBILL, BROWNE,
           COSTA, EARLL, GREENLEAF, ORIE, PILEGGI, PIPPY, PUNT,
           RAFFERTY, WAUGH, D. WHITE, WONDERLING AND WOZNIAK,
           JUNE 15, 2005

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JUNE 15, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc., in
     2     Pennsylvania, for its work.

     3     WHEREAS, Nationally, millions of dogs and cats are abandoned
     4  as strays in both rural and urban areas each year; and
     5     WHEREAS, Seventy thousand kittens and puppies are born every
     6  day in the United States; and
     7     WHEREAS, Ten to twelve million pets are euthanized annually
     8  in the United States due to lack of spaying/neutering on the
     9  part of owners; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is among the top seven states where
    11  pet/animal abuse cases occur; and
    12     WHEREAS, The Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc., is
    13  a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization dedicated to helping
    14  people and pets increase their quality of life; and
    15     WHEREAS, The Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc.,
    16  receives, shelters and cares for 8,000-10,000 animals annually
    17  from its service area of Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and northern

     1  York Counties of Pennsylvania; and
     2     WHEREAS, The Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc.,
     3  began a spay/neuter commitment that no animal is adopted without
     4  being spayed or neutered; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc.,
     6  provides educational programs that enhance the bond between
     7  people and animals; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc.,
     9  provides 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week emergency rescue for
    10  abandoned, injured and/or stray animals that could be a danger
    11  to the community; and
    12     WHEREAS, In 2004, the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area,
    13  Inc., investigated more than 1,000 reports of animal cruelty and
    14  neglect; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania recognize the
    16  Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, Inc., in Pennsylvania for
    17  its ongoing work and urge all citizens to spread messages
    18  advocating the spaying/neutering of animals; and be it further
    19     RESOLVED, That all citizens be urged to spread messages of
    20  advocacy for animal rescue and ethical animal treatment; and be
    21  it further
    22     RESOLVED, That all Pennsylvanians be challenged to take
    23  charge of their animal/pet care and to support the mission and
    24  services carried out by the Humane Society of the Harrisburg
    25  Area, Inc., and its workers/volunteers in this Commonwealth.
