No. 137 Session of 2007


        INTRODUCED BY BRUBAKER, ARMSTRONG, LAVALLE, MADIGAN, BAKER,
           KASUNIC, PUNT, ERICKSON, BROWNE, O'PAKE, FONTANA, ROBBINS,
           WONDERLING, PIPPY, TOMLINSON, RAFFERTY, FOLMER, KITCHEN AND
           COSTA, JUNE 19, 2007

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JUNE 19, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the importance of pollinators to ecosystem health
     2     and agriculture in this Commonwealth, as well as the need to
     3     increase awareness about protecting and sustaining
     4     pollinators by designating the week of June 24 through 30,
     5     2007, as "Pennsylvania Pollinator Week."

     6     WHEREAS, Bees, butterflies and other pollinator species have
     7  a critically important role in Pennsylvania agriculture by
     8  helping to produce a healthy and affordable food supply and by
     9  sustaining ecosystem health; and
    10     WHEREAS, Without honeybee pollinators, Pennsylvania's
    11  bountiful crops of apples, peaches, soybeans, pears, pumpkins,
    12  cucumbers, cherries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries
    13  would not be possible; and
    14     WHEREAS, Honeybee pollinators contribute more than $55
    15  million to the value of crops in this Commonwealth; and
    16     WHEREAS, It is in the strong economic interest of
    17  agricultural producers and consumers in this Commonwealth to
    18  ensure a healthy, sustainable pollinator population; and


     1     WHEREAS, Decline or disruption of pollinator health and
     2  population poses a significant threat to global food webs, the
     3  integrity of biodiversity and human health; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of June 24
     5  through 30, 2007, as "Pennsylvania Pollinator Week."
