A RESOLUTION 1 Designating June 14, 2000, as "United States Army Day" in 2 Pennsylvania in commemoration of the 225th birthday of the 3 United States Army. 4 WHEREAS, June 14, 2000, will mark the 225th birthday of the 5 United States Army; and 6 WHEREAS, Our nation's Army was born in 1775 when the Second 7 Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of ten companies 8 of riflemen from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania and 9 appointed George Washington as Commander in Chief; these events 10 served as a prelude to the birth of freedom the following year, 11 when out nation came into existence; and 12 WHEREAS, The United States Army has been a cornerstone of 13 America's freedom, a symbol of military power as well as service 14 to other nations, a leader in communications and technology and 15 a bulwark of patriotism and loyalty to this great nation; and 16 WHEREAS, United States Army personnel have long served
1 courageously and faithfully, achieving critical military 2 victories in far-flung theaters of operation; and 3 WHEREAS, The men and women of the United States Army 4 honorably and selflessly serve this nation in times of peace as 5 well as during periods of war and armed conflict; and 6 WHEREAS, The United States Army guards the rights, liberties 7 and privileges guaranteed by the Constitution of the United 8 States to each and every citizen of our great country and 9 defends the freedom that is the hallmark of this nation; and 10 WHEREAS, Since the birth of the United States Army in 1775, 11 13 million Pennsylvanians have served in its ranks and 25,000 12 Pennsylvanians have given their lives in battle while serving in 13 the Army, and 700,000 Army veterans currently reside in this 14 Commonwealth; and 15 WHEREAS, The United States Army has undoubtedly proven itself 16 to be the greatest fighting force in the world in the last two 17 and one-quarter centuries; therefore be it 18 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 14, 2000, as "United 19 States Army Day" in Pennsylvania.
